How it works
How it works
Why it works
X renders image transparency against two different backgrounds. In the timeline it flattens semi-transparent pixels onto a light background, washing them toward white. When you tap and hold to expand, it flattens them onto black, showing their true colour. By storing each pixel with a carefully chosen colour and alpha, the same PNG looks like your painted surface in the timeline and reveals the full picture on tap.
Your image never leaves your device
There is no account, no upload and no server. The image you choose is decoded, painted, previewed and encoded entirely inside your browser tab. Close the tab and nothing remains anywhere.
FAQ
FAQ
What is a tap and hold image on X / Twitter?+
It's an image that shows one thing as a timeline thumbnail and reveals a different, full picture when you tap and hold (or click) to expand it. The trick uses transparency: X composites the PNG on a light background in the timeline and on black when expanded, so the same file looks different in each place.
Why is tap and hold not working on my iPhone?+
The X mobile app re-encodes uploaded images to JPEG, which throws away the alpha (transparency) channel the effect depends on — so the hidden layer is lost. Always upload the exported PNG from a desktop browser at x.com. The image itself must be a PNG8 with alpha (this tool exports exactly that); a flattened JPEG can never work.
What is the tap and hold trend?+
It's a trend on X where people post images that hide a surprise: the timeline shows an innocent or plain preview, and tapping and holding reveals the real picture. It grew out of the Japanese 隠し絵 / Kakushie idea. This tool lets you make one from a single image in your browser.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?+
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — there is no account, no upload and no server processing. Your image never leaves your device.
How do I download the tap and hold image? What formats are supported?+
Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP, paint the visible area, then click Download PNG. The file is exported as an indexed-colour PNG8 with an alpha channel — the format X needs to preserve the hidden effect.
Does "load in 4K" actually work?+
"Load in 4K" is the viral name for the same tap-and-hold effect — it isn't really about 4K resolution. It works when the image is a PNG with transparency and is posted from a desktop browser; it fails when the X mobile app re-encodes it to JPEG. So yes, it works, as long as you keep the PNG and post from desktop.
What does "tap, hold and load in 4K" mean on X?+
It's the caption people add to a tap-and-hold image telling viewers to press and hold the picture to reveal the hidden version. "Load in 4K" is just the trend's phrasing — the picture doesn't actually change resolution; holding it makes X composite the PNG on a dark background, which shows the hidden layer.
