Why "load in 4K" / tap and hold is not working — and how to fix it

If you posted a tap and hold image on X and it doesn't reveal anything when held — or it shows the full picture from the start (it won't "load in 4K") — the cause is almost always one of a few things. Here's how to fix it on iPhone, Android and desktop.

Tap and hold not working on iPhone

The X mobile app re-encodes uploaded images to JPEG. JPEG has no transparency (alpha) channel, and the whole effect depends on that channel — so uploading from the iPhone app flattens your image and destroys the hidden layer. The fix: never upload from the phone app. Export the PNG from this tool, move it to a computer, and post it from a desktop browser at x.com. Viewers on iPhone will then see the effect correctly; it's only the uploading step that breaks it.

Tap and hold not working on Android

Android has a second, separate cause. For the reveal to work when viewing, X needs its rebuilt Android app — the newer version the effect was designed for. On top of that, the image resolution setting controls whether the hidden part loads: if images load at full resolution immediately, Android may show the whole picture from the start instead of revealing it on hold. Try changing the high-quality-images / data-saver setting (switch it to a different option than your current one — Never, Wi-Fi only, or Mobile data & Wi-Fi) until the tap-and-hold behavior works. As with iPhone, always upload your PNG from a desktop browser, not the Android app.

Quick checklist

• Export as PNG8 with transparency (this tool does that automatically).
• Upload from a desktop browser or PC at x.com — never the mobile app.
• On Android / Samsung, use X's rebuilt app and switch the image-quality (data-saver) setting if it won't load in 4K on hold.
• On iPhone / iOS, viewers see it fine — just don't upload from the iOS app, which flattens it to JPEG.
• If a Reddit or forum thread says 'load in 4K not working', it's almost always a JPEG re-encode — re-post the original PNG from desktop.
• Remember: pure-black and very dark areas can't be fully restored — a physical limit, not a bug.

The effect relies on how X currently renders transparent PNGs against light and dark backgrounds. If X changes its rendering, the behavior may change too.
